Historic Preservation
Twohy Building Exterior
Client: San Jose Redevelopment Agency
Architect: Jerome King Architects
Description: The project scope entailed the exterior renovation of a five story historic structure in the center of downtown San Jose near the Fairmont Hotel.
|
|
The structure is clad with terra cotta tile that was repaired and cleaned, the hodgepodge of incompatible storefronts removed and replaced in the style and configuration of the period, missing terracotta columns were replaced with matching GFRC ones, new awnings and lighting installed, and the Vermont Verde marble bulkheads replaced. We worked closely with the tenants to minimize disruption to their businesses and provide a safe environment for transit mall pedestrians. The project was submitted for an A.I.A design award.
Recently the C.I.M. Group of Hollywood California converted the interiors to loft units and maintained the exteriors as we had left them.
Historical Footnote: The Twohy Brothers, who developed this building along with T.S. Montgomery, were the sons of Irish immigrants who migrated to America to escape the potato famine and were railroad builders in the West at the turn of the Century.
